SPECULATION GAME: ANGELA #1

Kevin Feige lit a fire under Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #1, and it has turned into speculator kindling. Here’s what you need to know.

THE BEACON has BEEN LIT

Let’s start with the rumor. In recent weeks, Feige, who happens to be Marvel’s head man in charge, was asked about transgender characters in the MCU. He responded that it’s likely going to happen very soon. To even more fan the speculative flames, he added that a transgender character was being incorporated into an MCU film that is currently in development.

Truthfully, that doesn’t narrow things down. Black Widow and The Eternals are both on the slate for this year, while 2021 promises Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten Rings, doctor odd in the Multiverse of Madness, and Thor: love and Thunder. It’s the latter that lots of collectors are linking to Feige’s comments, which brings us to Angela and Sera.

In the comics, Angela is a daughter of Odin, which makes her the sister of the God of Thunder himself. In the pages of Angela: Asgard’s Assassin, it is revealed that Angela is in a romantic relationship with Sera, who lots of are assuming is the most likely character Feige alluded to in his statement.

Who is Sera? Her story is that she, like Angela, is from the Tenth Realm, Heven. Sera is one of the Anchorites, a race of wingless male angels though she identifies as female. She is widely considered the most famous transgender character in marvel Comics, which is why lots of speculators are purchasing copies of (and driving up prices for) her first appearance in Angela: Asgard’s Assassin #1.

CURRENT VALUES

Since Feige made his remarks, the graded 9.8 has been the main target for investors and collectors. There has only been activity for the standard cover and the Joe Quesada variant, but the prices for both have gone through the roofing compared to the past two years.

Back in 2018, there was only one recorded sale of a 9.8 standard edition, and it sold for an underwhelming $28. Last year, seven copies traded hands online and averaged $40. So far in 2020, there have been four sales, none of which were for under $93. considering that January 5, it hasn’t dropped below $125, and one set a record high of $160. That gives it a fair market value of $133, and that’s based strictly on the rumor that Feige was referring to Sera.

The Quesada variant is doing even better in terms of FMV. considering that its publication in 2015, that particular cover graded at a 9.8 never sold for a lot more than $60, and there were no sales all last year. While there have only been two recorded sales in 2020, they have eclipsed the old numbers with a January 1 sale of $145 followed by $200 the next day.

THE FUTURE

There’s no telling exactly where Feige is choosing his comments, and that leaves much to the imagination. Regardless, the evidence very much leans toward Sera being the first transgender character in the MCU. To take this theory a step further, I believe Sera won’t be entering the MCU alone, but I’ll follow up with that theory in the coming days.
